HERE ARE SOME DANCE ETIQUITTE TIPS FOR NEW AND EXPERIENCED DANCERS!!
Because we are having so many new people coming to dance with us on Monday, I need to speak to a couple of items under the banner of "dance etiquette". As a rule, line dancers are the kindest, most generous people in the world....but sometimes we all get real focused on what we're doing and forget that there are lots of people next to us on the floor who have different experience levels. When the floor is full, it's easier for little minor conflicts to occur. It's real important that we all treat each other with respect and friendship so we continue to have a fun dance experience.
For Experienced Dancers: I love how everyone in our group reaches outside themselves to help newer dancers. On the other hand, sometimes we can forget how intimidating some dances can be for the new people. It came to me that someone (I don't know who) on a Monday night told a new dancer (again, I don't know which one) to "get in the back if you don't know the dance". That is pretty much a sure fire way to push a new dancer out the door, never to return. So, even if you are trying to encourage the new dancer, please choose your words carefully. If there is something bigger going on (perhaps a new dancer who's maybe had too much to drink) please let me know and Stan and I will figure out how to address that. Also, if you are a dancer who likes to throw in lots of fancy stuff into the dance, that is perfectly FINE (I wish I could do it)...I would just ask you to kind of be aware if you are dancing near new dancers. If you add spins into dances that a newbie is trying to learn without them, it really throws them off. I would suggest that ya just move to a place on the floor that wouldn't be right in the midst of newbies. And, spin, spin, spin your little heart out!!!
For New Dancers: Every one of us remembers when WE were new and so we are very understanding of the fact that new people are gonna struggle and mess up! We encourage you to try any dance we do on the floor. At the same time, I would suggest wisdom from the great philosopher Kenny Rogers...."know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em". There are times when the dance might just be too difficult for your current level and, in that case, sometimes it's best to step aside and watch. Use your gut feelin' on this one. If you wanna freestyle dance on the edge of the floor, that is totally cool....just try to steer away from the edge of the line dancers because seeing different dancin' goin' on in the peripheral vision can be distracting to dancers who may be just learning as well.
Thanks for your understanding on these little things!
